Six Years of PRIC: Forging the Future of Packaging in Ghana

Over six years, the Packaging Research and Innovation Challenge (PRIC), a collaboration between Royal Crown Packaging Limited (RCPL), Qualiplast Limited and the Institute of Packaging, Ghana (IOPG), has grown from a bold experiment into a national driver of packaging innovation. This journey has showcased creativity, resilience, and groundbreaking solutions from some of Ghana’s brightest minds.

Key Milestones

  • 2019: Ashesi University wins the inaugural edition, setting the tone for creativity and collaboration.
  • 2020: The University of Ghana impresses in a fully virtual competition.
  • 2021: Ashesi claims its second victory with a practical, creative solution.
  • 2022: KNUST secures its first win and earns international recognition at the WPO WorldStar Student Competition.
  • 2023: KNUST defends its title with Alpha Biopac, a commercialization-ready solution that wins a WorldStar Award.
  • 2024: The University of Ghana wins with “EGGcelent,” followed by KNUST’s “Biolive” and Academic City’s bronze finish.

PRIC 2025: Bigger and Better

This year marks the largest edition yet, with eight universities competing: University of Ghana, KNUST, Ashesi University, Academic City, University for Development Studies, Koforidua Technical University, Ho Technical University, and University of Education, Winneba.

Sustainability, the circular economy, and AfCFTA-readiness will define this year’s challenge.
