Beyond the Pink

How Companies Can Package Care, Awareness and Action in Health Campaigns

October is coming. What will your brand do?

Every October, brands turn pink. By November, most of it fades.

The need does not. Breast cancer was Ghana’s most diagnosed cancer in 2022, with 5,026 new cases (GLOBOCAN). Nearly 70% of women are diagnosed late (Breast Care International). Late detection, not a lack of colour, is what costs lives.

So beyond the pink, what will your brand deliver? The strongest campaigns carry three things: care, awareness and action.

Why pink alone falls short

·       Fatigue. People already know the disease exists. Repeating it earns a scroll, not a screening.

·       Pink-washing. Pink logos with no real contribution get noticed, and punished.

Keep the pink. Just put something inside it.

Care: start with your people

Host free screening days at work. Give staff time off to get checked. Confirm your insurance covers screening. Employees who feel cared for become your most believable storytellers.

Awareness: be useful, not just visible

Teach the next step: how to self examine, the early warning signs, where to screen and what it costs. Bust the myths. Men get it too, and it is not only an older woman’s disease. Speak local languages.

Action: make it count

Commit to one measurable outcome. Fund mammograms, disclose a donation per product sold, or back an established foundation. Then report back. “We screened 500 women” beats “We went pink.”

Your box is a billboard that goes home

A carton passes through drivers, retailers and families, then sits in the home for days. No paid ad gets that much attention, and you already own it.

·       Print a self check guide on the inside flap.

·       Add a QR code to a screening locator or donation page.

·       Slip a reminder card into every delivery.

·       Send staff care packs with a screening voucher.

·       State clearly what each purchase contributes.

Corrugated board prints well, gets kept and reused, and is recyclable.

Before you launch, ask

  1. Did we care for our own staff first?
  2. Do we have a credible health partner?
  3. Will people know what to do next?
  4. Can we measure the result?
  5. Will we report back and continue beyond October?

Package what matters

Pink is the wrapping. Care, useful information and measurable action are what sit inside. This October, deliver more than a ribbon.
